Interview with Olivia O'Brien

04.26.2019

Recently, Olivia O'Brien made a stop in Boston on her latest tour. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts we were unable to sit down and chat with her. But luckily, thanks to the world wide web - we were still able to squeeze in a quick email interview with her. As of today, her debut album Was It Even Real? has officially been released to the world! Keep reading to see what she had to say about her new album!

Punk Junk: How excited are you for the release of your debut album?

Olivia: Very excited!

Punk Junk: Which song(s) are you most excited for fans to hear?

Olivia: All of them! My favorite is called "We Lied To Each Other"

Punk Junk: What is your songwriting process like? Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Olivia: I don’t really have a songwriting process I just kind of do my own thing. Sometimes I write a concept when I am inspired at home and then bring it to a session to flesh out with a producer. Making music is making art and you can’t put it in a box like that, it’s different every time. I am inspired by my life and occasionally the lives of those close to me.

Punk Junk: Touring can be really hard. How do you deal with rough days on the road?

Olivia: I wish I had a good coping mechanism but I don’t yet. I wish I could say I meditate or something but I guess watching Netflix or listening to music can distract me while I am on long drives in the van. It just overall takes a huge toll on your physical and mental health so I try to eat healthy when I can but a lot of the time the only thing to eat for miles is gas station food.

Punk Junk: Do you find it to be more of an asset or a challenge to be such a young artist?

Olivia: I don’t feel like Ii am my age, and I definitely don’t act my age. I've never really found my age to be an asset or a challenge, but I guess in some ways it can be both. Maybe it’s easier for me to relate to my listeners because most of them are close to my age... but hopefully they will grow with me in which case age doesn’t matter. I started my career so long ago that even though i’m still young I feel much older. I also am the youngest of all my friends by a few years and I always forget I’m not the same age as them.

Punk Junk: What are you looking forward to most in 2019?

Olivia: I like to take life one day at a time and not think too much into the future because it stresses me out but I want to keep making music for a very long time.

We are so excited to listen to the rest of Olivia's album and for you to all finally hear it as well.

What Is Punk?

If you look at the Merriam-Webster definition of punk, you would find a motley of things. At Punk Junk Magazine, we believe in punk as a culture: a badass social interpretation built by those who are bold, electric, and unapologetically themselves. In our eyes, a punk is someone who fights for what they want regardless of obstacles or outside forces; they put their hearts and souls into their passions and make their dreams a reality. Being punk means being yourself, despite social norms and peer-pressure; punk is having a sense of awareness, respect for yourself and others, and an open mind. So to that, we say... why be a dreamer when you can be a PUNK!
